IN our tropical beach-town sayulita, mexico
SAYULITA, MéXICO
Nestled along the Pacific coast, we often describe Sayulita, Mexico as a charming tropical surf and yoga town, world-known for its delicious restaurants and mixed inclusive community [Sayulita locals, Mexicans from all over + expats often from Canada, USA + Europe.] The location is considered a sacred energetic land by the local indigenous population. The gov of Mexico has labeled Sayulita a “Pueblo Magico” [Magical Town]. There are 132 Magical Towns. Click here to read about them.
Something we love about this area is that Sayulita is so easy to travel to. Multiple daily flights land into our closest airport PVR [Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco]. From the airport, Sayulita is about an hour drive going north. You can take an Uber for approx. 600MXN [$30USD] or take the bus which is easy and only takes 10 mins longer than Uber, for 50MXN [$2.50 USD].
The vibrant town of Sayulita offers the mix of lush jungles and gentle surf beaches, making it the perfect backdrop of nature all around, to embark on a personal growth + healing journey— your 200-hour teacher training with us at EVOKA!

yoga training Student Pre-requisites
Basic Yoga Experience
While it's not mandatory, having prior experience with yoga asana is highly recommended. We suggest the trainee practice 3-5 yoga classes per week leading up to the training. This will ensure everyone has a solid and steady foundation of the practice and we can explore from a similar starting point. Ability to do intermediate or advanced poses is not required but there will be options to learn, practice and learn to teach advanced asanas as well! Remember— you can understand and learn how to safely teach advanced poses without being able to do them yourself.
Health
Trainee should be in good physical condition. Yoga teacher trainings require 2-4 hours per day of movement so it's essential to be prepared. Our classes are accessible to all ability levels. There are no requirements to perform intermediate/advanced asanas. Classes offered throughout the training will be a variety of strong and gentle styles. Participants are encouraged to participate in activities suited for their experience level and can alternatively modify all parts of class or observe some classes while taking notes.
Dedication + Commitment
Yoga teacher training is intensive and requires dedication of time and focus. Trainee must be prepared to commit to the program's schedule and coursework. Trainee must expect to be in class, working on assignments and studying for 12-13 hours per training day.
Clean Lifestyle
We recommend trainees abstain from alcohol/substances 10-30 days prior to arriving and during the in-person training, and to follow an ayurvedic/ vegetarian diet.
Age Requirements
18 years or older.
Openness
Come with an open mind and an open heart!

SAYULITA yoga teacher training FAQ
WHAT IS THE STUDENT-TEACHER RATIO?
This will be an intimate training with lots of opportunities to connect personally with your instructions. We have three trainers and you can expect a max of 8 students per teacher.
I CAN’T DO INTERMEDIATE/ ADVANCED POSES. DO I BELONG IN A YOGA TEACHER TRAINING?
Yes! The world needs all kinds of yoga instructors of all different abilities and levels. While it’s expected you have a consistent yoga practice before joining, there is no expectation that you can do intermediate or advanced poses. It is required that you show up ready to participate in daily classes. We recommend taking 3-5 yoga classes per week to prepare. We aim to prepare teachers for any level of yoga they wish to teach, whether that’s a class for beginners or seniors or an advanced arm balances workshop. This foundational training will prepare you, and of course after a two-week immersion, your personal practice will improve significantly.
TELL ME MORE ABOUT THE 40-HOURS OF REQUIRED PRE-WORK (ONLINE & SELF STUDY).
To make our program more travel-friendly (2 weeks instead of the average 3-4 weeks of a full immersion) we will cover 160 hours of the online training at the Sayulita immersion. This requires you to complete about 40 hours of total online prework. We will be sending you a pre-work packet. Depending on how far in advance you have signed up, you may need to dedicate anywhere from 5-20 hours per week to your pre-work.
Keep in mind if you do not complete the pre-work assignments before the yoga teacher training immersion, you can complete it at your own pace during or after the immersion. You will have about 2 hours each evening during the immersion you can dedicate to your online pre-work if you need to catch up. But it’s better for your enjoyment and relaxation during the immersion part of the program to complete these assignments beforehand. Note: Your 200-Yoga Teacher Training certificate will not be issued until these assignments are completed.
I WANT TO LEARN HOW TO TEACH YIN YOGA, WHAT KIND OF TRAINING DO I NEED?
All yoga teachers need to have a 200-hour foundational training. From a hatha-vinyasa teacher training, you can develop and teach various styles of yoga based on your interest, studies and background. Many 200-hour certified yoga teachers take an additional weekend yin yoga teacher training after they complete the 200-hour training if they wish to specialize and teach this style of yoga. You can also do some self study in yin yoga to prepare yin yoga classes. We will be offering a few yin yoga classes during this training and a beginning overview to yin yoga, which is the perfect springboard for teaching yin yoga.
WHAT IS HATHA VINYASA YOGA? IS THIS THE YOGA I SHOULD CHOOSE TO STUDY?
You can think of Hatha yoga like the basis of the physical yoga practice. Hatha is the system of physical techniques of yoga. Many yoga styles have their origin in Hatha yoga such as Vinyasa, Power Vinyasa, Ashtanga, Rocket yoga, Slow Flow. All of these styles of classes, and likely the types of classes you are taking in your favourite yoga studios, fall under the umbrella of Hatha Yoga. Choosing a Hatha Yoga Teacher Training gives you a well-rounded yoga education and the perfect mix of skills to teach a wide variety of classes.
WHAT IF I DON’T WANT TO TEACH YOGA CLASSES AND I JUST WANT TO IMPROVE AND LEARN MORE YOGA. should I DO THIS TRAINING?
Many people take yoga teacher training as a means to refine and deepen their personal yoga practice and learning yoga philosophy. While you will be required to practice-teach to complete the certification, there will be a vast amount of content offered that goes far beyond setting up and teaching a class. We just ask that you are open to learning the teaching aspect as well. You will benefit greatly from the information and who knows— maybe after the training you’ll feel differently about wanting to share the practice! Plus— this is a training that will prepare you to offer meditation classes, breathwork classes and other healing modalities, not just yoga posture classes.
I WANT TO BECOME A SOUND HEALING FACILITATOR, BREATHWORK FACILITATOR, LIFE COACH OR OTHER TYPE OF HOLISTIC FACILITATOR, WILL THIS TRAINING HELP ME?
Yes! Yoga Alliance 200-Hour certificate offers the foundational skills and knowledge for offering all types of healing modalities. Yogic philosophy, understanding how to develop healing sessions and hold space for others and professional skills are all covered in this training. You will also learn about the energetic body and ayurvedic system of medicine. Once you have this training certificate, you will obtain the Yoga Alliance qualifications holistic wellness facilities recognize and expect as well as the confidence and knowledge to further develop healing sessions. We recommend you start with this widely recognized 200-hour yoga teacher training and then build your skillset with shorter workshops and trainings in your desired specialization areas.
IS THERE AN OPTION TO BECOME REIKI CERTIFIED DURING THE TRAINING?
While Chel and Annik are Master-Level Reiki Practitioners and Teachers, Reiki hours are not permitted by Yoga Alliance to be counted as part of the 200-hour yoga teacher training program. If you are interested in Reiki Certification trainings, these can easily be added on a couple days after the yoga teacher training. Some Reiki Certifications [like Chels’s!] do qualify as Yoga Alliance continuing education credit hours after you receive your 200-hour certification.
IS MEXICO SAFE?
YES! EVOKA teachers live full-time in Sayulita, Mexico for several years and can tell you first-hand you will feel completely comfortable and safe during your stay.
IS IT POSSIBLE TO SHARE A ROOM WITH OTHER yoga STUDENTS?
After you sign up for the yoga teacher training, if you’d like to find a roommate to cut costs, we’ll add you to a WhatsApp group. It’s likely you will find a like-minded student interested in sharing accommodation on-site at Hotelito Los Sueños to reduce accommodation cost. There are a variety of hotels, hostels and Airbnbs for all budgets.
HOW MUCH SPENDING-MONEY DO I NEED TO BUDGET?
This all depends on your spending, eating and shopping tendencies. Your food cost will likely range $5-40/day based on if you prepare your own food vs eat out only, and your food preferences. We will offer affordable food options and recommendations or you can bring your own food in a cooler. Or if you’re staying on site you have that ease of popping up to your room and having your meals in your room on breaks. There is a wide range of healthy and affordable restaurants walking distance to the yoga shala.
Additionally, you may want to invest in activities on your days/afternoons off (there will be two afternoons to explore) or purchase snacks or souvenirs at the copious artisan stalls, markets, shops and restaurants.
CAN I USE MY CREDIT CARD IN SAYULITA?
It’s best to have Mexican pesos while in Sayulita. Most tourists use a debit, credit or Wise card to withdraw pesos from the bank’s ATM as needed. Another option is to bring cash in USD and go to the exchange place in Plaza Riviera Nayarit, Bucerias on your way to Sayulita from the airport. Most restaurants and stores do not accept credit cards, although some do.
CAN I DRINK THE WATER in sayulita mexico?
We do not drink the tap water in Mexico. However unlimited purified water is widely available. Ice served all over town is also purified. So frozen drinks, cold beverages and smoothies are all safe.
DO YOU RECOMMEND TRAVEL INSURANCE?
Travel insurance is a personal choice, it can be an extra layer of security. I have never gotten travel insurance in my life but my partner and many of my friends always do. Once you begin enrolment, no refunds will be offered. Some insurance policies may cover you for refunding your trip in the case of a medical emergency. Check with the credit card that you book your flight with [many credit card companies include trip delay & travel emergency medical coverage]. There’s also many companies that provide inexpensive medical coverage, such as SafetyWing or IMGlobal.
